Keeping the Light On: Oclip 2 Ultra

The days are getting shorter and that means more darkness. So you’ll need more light. Olight has just what you need.

The company is known for its rugged yet elegant compact LED flashlights, the Ark series. But now Olight has come out with an even smaller source of illumination that’s quickly become our favorite in the country. The Oclip 2 Ultra is just $69.99 but offers features and stunning illumination that surpasses that of full-sized flashlights costing twice the price.

Measuring and weighing less than 3 ounces and just 60 by 28 by 35 mm, the light is rechargeable and lasts for hours (it’s rated for about an hour and a half at full brightness but we haven’t fully benchmarked it yet). There’s also the Premium version (pictured here) that doubles the battery life, for $94.99.

The Oclip 2 Ultra literally clips on to just about anything—a hat, a jacket collar, or a shelf—and has a built-in magnet for adhering to a car hood or frame. Its light is also mounted on a dual axis swivel that allows you to point it where you need it. And there’s a red light and ultraviolet light (think crime scenes), as well. The diminutive light has an IP66 rating, which means it is rugged enough to withstand dust, dirt, and rain, but it is not completely water proof (so don’t take it snorkeling.)

I’ve been using it for those evenings when I’ve had to go out to the wood pile after dark, but the Oclip is also great for seeing behind the AV equipment rack to sort out wires or for spot lighting on the basement work bench—even for digging into my vehicle’s engine compartment to change out a head light.
